Fit for Food –
Elastomer compounds for the food industry
A compound portfolio specifically developed for food applications
The food industry is a diverse and demanding environment. The variety of products and the use of numerous flavors can have different effects on elastomer components. For example, acids, alkalis or alcohols can affect material properties. Mechanical stress caused from frequent product changes and cleaning cycles is also a challenge.
To meet these high demands and ensure food safety, we offer a specially developed portfolio of elastomer compounds for the food industry in accordance with BfR recommendation XXI.
Fit for Food is our portfolio of compounds for use in the food industry. The streamlined and well-sorted compound portfolio is based on NR, NBR and EPDM. It covers a hardness range from 35 Shore A to 85 Shore A, is versatile for a wide range of applications and includes both black and colored compounds.
The corresponding certifications, which confirm the compliance of the formulations with the underlying positive lists, form the basis for successfully passing the required component tests in accordance with BfR Recommendation XXI.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is a German federal agency responsible for assessing risks to human and animal health. The BfR plays an important role in the area of food contact materials. BfR Recommendation XXI covers articles based on natural and synthetic rubber as well as latices from natural and synthetic rubber. This recommendation aims to ensure the safety and compatibility of such materials.
The European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG) specializes in hygienic design and technical expertise in the food industry. It has developed specific guidelines for the use of elastomers. These guidelines cover the selection of suitable materials, hygienic product design, resistance to cleaning agents and chemicals, temperature resistance and compliance with applicable regulations.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a federal agency of the United States, is particularly important to the U.S. market. The FDA's main task is to protect public health by issuing regulations for the safety of products entering the U.S. market.
Gummiwerk KRAIBURG offers a wide range of compounds with different polymers for articles commonly used in the food industry, such as flat seals, O-rings, plugs or diaphragms that come into direct contact with food. The recipes of these compounds meet the requirements of the FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 positive list.
The 3-A Sanitary Standards of 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. (3-A SSI) define globally recognized cleaning options for the food industry. These standards contain hygienic criteria for equipment and systems used in the processing and packaging of perishable foods, including materials that must be cleaned regularly.
