BAM, TÜV und DVGW certified compounds
for hydrogen applications
Our compounds, tested and certified by BAM, TÜV, and DVGW, support climate-friendly hydrogen technologies and minimize leaching, permeation and explosive decompression. With high-purity raw materials and optimized recipes, we ensure safety and efficiency in hydrogen systems.
Few energy sources are currently as much in the spotlight as hydrogen (H2). Society, politics and industry are striving for innovative hydrogen technologies. The reason: sustainably produced H2 is a climate-friendly alternative to fossil fuels.
We are committed to supporting the transformation of energy supply with solutions for environmentally friendly applications along the entire value chain - from production to transport, storage and consumption.
We continuously optimize our elastomer compounds, focusing on three key aspects: permeation, explosive decompression and leaching.
Elastomer compounds consist of various raw materials and may contain low molecular weight organic compounds that can be leached out of the elastomer matrix by contact media such as deionized water. This phenomenon, known as leaching, can cause temporary or permanent effects on the application. Fuel cell systems, in particular, operate with a finely tuned balance and must be protected from external performance or durability degradation.
Experts at Gummiwerk KRAIBURG are familiar with every raw material used and evaluate them on criteria such as purity, chemical suitability and particle size. Our compounds for contact with hydrogen systems are made exclusively from high-purity raw materials that remain in the elastomer matrix, preventing contamination or loss of sealing performance.
Gas permeation through elastomer applications, such as seals, is a particularly critical issue in hydrogen applications. Hydrogen is the smallest and most volatile chemical element, with a density 14 times lower than that of air. It is colorless, odorless and highly flammable.
Hydrogen systems operate almost exclusively at high pressure. The industry strives for 1000 bar, imposing high demands on sealing materials.
The compound recipes must be carefully developed to ensure hydrogen is retained within the system and to prevent potential risks from leakage and ignition.
Elastomer products are diffusion-open materials that temporarily store gases, such as hydrogen, in the matrix at high system pressures. The diffused gas expands rapidly during a sudden pressure drop in the system (e.g., safety shutdown or external force), leading to "explosive decompression."
The rapid expansion of the trapped gas volume leads to the destruction of chemical bonds and results in reduced sealing effectiveness or even complete system failure.
Our recipes are developed for low permeation while withstanding sudden pressure drops.

Test reports according to SAE J2600 and ZP5101
BAM tested at 1000 bar
The SAE J2600 standard defines the standard test methods for evaluating the suitability of materials for use in hydrogen vehicles and fueling stations. The tests include permeation resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical properties and long-term behavior. The TÜV (Technical Inspection Association) certification confirms that Gummiwerk KRAIBURG's compounds meet all the requirements of the SAE J2600 standard.
The BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) is an independent research institution responsible for the safety of products and equipment in various industries. BAM testing of our compounds at a pressure of 1000 bar confirms the suitability of our compounds for use in critical hydrogen applications.
The German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW) has taken an important step in ensuring material compatibility with hydrogen with the ZP 5101 certification program. As part of this program, the permeability of hydrogen through various materials is tested using appropriate test methods. The tests reveal significant differences between different elastomers.
