High-performance compounds for bridge bearings by Gummiwerk KRAIBURG
Gummiwerk KRAIBURG, a leading specialist in high-quality rubber and silicone compounds, presents its latest developments in specialized materials for the production of elastomeric bearings. These customized compounds are specifically developed to meet the demanding requirements of modern bridge construction, ensuring high performance and durability in challenging construction projects.
Elastomeric bearings produced with Gummiwerk KRAIBURG’s compounds play a crucial role in the safe, long-term functionality of bridges: they serve as elastic connections between the superstructure and substructure, effectively absorbing both horizontal and vertical forces.
Meeting high standards
These compounds comply with the European standard EN 1337-3, which has been in force since December 2005 and replaces the previously valid DIN 4141-14 and -15. This standard applies to elastomeric bearings for use in bridge construction or other structures with comparable bearing conditions. The scope of application includes various types of bearings with a base area up to 1,200 x 1,200 mm, including reinforced bearings, sliding bearings, unreinforced bearings and unreinforced strip bearings.
NR (natural rubber) or CR (chloroprene rubber) are the only polymers approved for the manufacture of elastomeric bearings. The elastomers used must meet high physical and mechanical requirements, verified through testing of both sample bodies and the bearings themselves. Testing frequencies are strictly defined and comprehensive documentation is mandatory, covering initial approval tests as well as quarterly and annual evaluations.
With the long-established CC6AMZ (CR) material, Gummiwerk KRAIBURG has extensive experience with these processes. However, recent regulatory updates and reclassifications of specific raw materials made it necessary to revise this compound.
Future-proof materials for bridge construction: the next generation
With the development of CC6AMZ-/08, Gummiwerk KRAIBURG offers a material free from CMR- and SVHC-classified substances, thus ensuring a lower risk during processing.
Additionally, the company’s NR-based material NN6AUZ, also free of CMR and SVHC-classified components, offers a future-oriented alternative within a well-sorted portfolio. Both compounds are developed for the widely used shear modulus of 0.9 MPa, offering reliable solutions for bridge construction. With its innovative materials, Gummiwerk KRAIBURG contributes to the durability and safety of bridges and structures.
